ABSTRACT

The crickets and pipe bombs used "strike anywhere" matches to initiate pyrotechnic fuse; the bomb techs devised a simple method to make recovered and rendered safe, permitting transfer to the Denver bomb trailer pending destruction. The presence of explosive canines resulted in their assignment to the school, and reassignment of that bomb team to inspect the parking areas. The Douglas County Sheriff's bomb squad had been intentionally omitted from the response; they stayed on mutual aid to handle any responses in the Metropolitan Denver area. In the case of Columbine, the bomb squads serving the Metropolitan Denver area successfully confronted a situation with a variety of previously unencountered circumstances. The local Jefferson County Sheriff's Office bomb squad had early on realized the conditions would require greater manpower rather than they alone could muster. A number of and variety of devices had functioned in the school, and these required post blast investigation, as had the off-site diversionary devices.
