ABSTRACT

A video camcorder, on a tripod, aimed at the victim, was soon relieved of its cassette tape; this and a stack of tapes were turned over to Hollywood investigators, who quickly began to review the tapes. The responding Hollywood police officers entered the second floor dwelling, where they found a decomposing body and signs indicating construction of an Improvised explosive device. They retreated and requested the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) Bomb and Arson Squad. Prior to units being equipped for hazmat response, they requested material support from the BSO crime scene unit, which delivered a variety of blood-borne pathogen protective equipment. Based upon the scene investigation by the BSO bomb technicians, and video reviews by Hollywood detectives, a disturbing tale unwound. The training, tools, and techniques of the bomb techs make them the only personnel available to safely confront any device.
