ABSTRACT

An informant is the arms, legs, and eyes of a handler. As an informant, understanding other people’s motives was crucial to my survival. For handlers, understanding an informant’s motives is crucial for the survival of the operation and of everyone involved in it. Therefore, a handler must try to understand the motive-or the many motives-that may lie deep in the heart of the informant. Unfortunately, sometimes this is not possible. Sometimes the handler will have to make judgment calls about unseen motives, based on visible actions.
