ABSTRACT

Despite the importance of the private citizen and the local community in preventing crime, the state will always play a central and dominant role in crime prevention specifically and crime control generally. Not only are governments the caretakers of the criminal justice system, they are also responsible for a broad range of policy areas that can make a direct contribution to preventing crime and criminality, such as education and schools, child and family welfare, health care, subsidized housing, community development, recreation programs, and urban planning and design, to name a few.
