ABSTRACT

Recovery Mechanisms Following an Exercise Bout A full recovery following a bout of training is very important to continued effective conditioning and to the achievement of maximal exercise potential at the time when a competition is scheduled. An efcient training programme draws an appropriate balance between training loads and recovery intervals. Tactics for ensuring complete recovery in the period immediately before athletic competition include a tapering of conditioning [45], or if normal training is continued, appropriate nutrition, sleep and the use of relaxation techniques and mental preparation. Issues of tapering have been presented in Chapter 11.
