ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we begin by looking at some general features of parasites and then take a closer look at some infections caused by protozoan parasitic pathogens, which account for millions of infections in the world. Next, we look at some detail about the infections caused by helminths (worms), and in the last part of the chapter, we look at diseases caused by fungi. We have chosen to look at fungal infection last because they are for the most part opportunistic and rarely bother us if we have intact and functioning defenses. However, fungal infections can be very dangerous for individuals who are immunocompromised.
