ABSTRACT
The word antibiotic is defined as “a chemical that controls the growth of microorganisms”, which implies that all products used to kill microbes of any kind are antibiotics. However, in common usage, the term antibiotic is associated with products taken internally and designed to kill bacteria only. In this chapter, we use antibiotic in terms of killing bacteria and specify other antimicrobials on the basis of the pathogens they affect.
