ABSTRACT

This chapter is primarily dedicated to bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Even though modifying existing antibiotics can increase the life spans of those antibiotics, resistance is inevitable. In other words, resistance to antibiotics is a matter not of if but of when. Resistance has become such a widespread and alarming problem it is important that health care professionals understand why and how this resistance occurs. The development of resistance to antiviral and antiparasitic drugs will be briefly covered. We will also look at the development of new antibiotics here, since resistance has become the driving force behind the need to develop new antibiotics.
