ABSTRACT

Some definitions of the types of memory that may be stored in the human brain are helpful. Short-term memory, also known as primary or active memory, represents the processing of current information. Functions of the temporal lobe region are concerned with object recognition, learning and memory, and emotional reactions. The formation of long-term memory seems to rely on an area of the brain referred to as the hippocampus, because selective damage to this structure impairs the ability to form long-term memories. Multiple social, psychological, and biological factors determine the level of mental health of a person at any point in time. Quite apart from epigenetic influences on the age-related neurodegeneration suffered by most individuals, there is evidence that some mental health problems can arise through changes in epigenetic regulation that are sometimes imposed on the genome relatively early in life.
