ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the pressure-lowering effects of the compounds, discusses the problems associated with the administration of these chemicals for that purpose, and assess their potential therapeutic value. It examines other effects that the cannabinoids have on the eye. The chapter considers the anatomy and physiology of the eye as it relates to glaucoma and the pharmacological therapy for the disease. Some factors important in the use of drugs to treat this condition will be included. The chapter presents information about the different types of glaucoma and deals with the cannabinoids, both naturally occurring and synthetic, in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It also discusses the new pharmacotherapy for the conditions and other ocular effects that are known to result from the use of cannabinoids. The innermost layer is the retina, the light-sensitive structure of the eye responsible for transmission of visual impulses by way of the optic nerve.
