ABSTRACT

The introduction offers a brief but concise overview of the aims and the scope of the book. It delivers insights into why it is essential to include a gender perspective when studying digitalisation in journalism. This part starts start with an analysis of the current status of women in journalism and the progress that has (or has not been) made in gender issues in the last few decades. The main argument that is developed is that studying the possible influence of technological innovation on gender issues in journalism is essential because earlier research has shown that the progress of women in journalism is not linear and profoundly sensitive to structural transitions in the media industry. Besides this, there is a discussion of the role of digitalisation in recent shifts in journalism both in terms of new digital tools that have impacted on the work of journalists in general and new forms of journalism that have emerged in an increasingly digitised context. This contextual information enables readers to gain a fuller understanding of gender aspects in the subsequent chapters. Finally, the introduction clarifies the feminist position that is articulated throughout the book and how it is interwoven into the various chapters.
