ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a state of the art review of relevant research related to the topic and themes explored in the book. More specifically, it connects the dots between journalism studies, feminist media studies and feminist technology studies. It provides readers with a clear notion of how concepts from these three fields of inquiry can complement each other to tackle the gender-technology question in journalism. From feminist media studies, the chapter draws on research that has exposed gendered obstacles such as the glass ceiling, the old boys’ network, sexism and sexual harassment that contribute to the underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions, higher age groups and prestigious hard news beats and media sectors. This is combined with insights from journalism studies on structural transitions in the media industry, changing working conditions in journalism, the adoption of technology in the newsroom and new forms of data-driven and computational journalism. Feminist technology studies provide the final piece of the puzzle, since its insights into how gender and technology are mutually shaped and contribute to the underrepresentation of women in information and communication technology (ICT) are useful in the context of increased interaction between journalism and the computer field.
