ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that how countries can use Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12.3.1.a as a metric to measure the success of key policy objectives in decreasing losses and the overall efficiency of supply chains. Commodity groups in the index will provide ranges of losses and allow comparability globally in aggregate. The four steps to compiling the index if the data exists are: Select the commodities for the index basket and compile their weights, Compile the Food Loss Percentages of each commodity, Compare the Food Loss Percentage over time, and report to the Food and Agricultural Organization the percentage losses, loss quantity, and references quantities in the annual Agriculture Production Questionnarie used for international SDG 12.3.1 monitoring. Efforts such as the case studies that US Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service has collected serve the purpose as part of global data set and can be used as values in the SDG 12.3 framework for the chosen commodities.
