ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a series of experiments conducted in a studio between March 2015 and October 2017. It focuses on the research question, ‘How might shadows be created by interaction with a dancing body?’ The chapter explore shadows that add something new or shift attention to the dancer’s appearance. It also focuses on the research question, ‘What principles of physicality and dynamics underpin shadows?’ The chapter investigates shadow as an autonomous entity through the analysis of its physical and dynamic principles. Gombrich E. consideration suggests that shadows on the floor that are similar and close to the dancer can be perceived as being ‘solid’. The concept of shadow as something ‘solid’ can be associated with physical objects, the shadow-legs being a clue for the viewer to perceive shadows as an extended part of the dancer. The ‘board shadow’ experiment demonstrated the exploration of standing movements on the platform creating shadows on the board.
