ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book addresses lighting strategies for working with shadows in dance practices. It explores new strategies for creating shadow within dance practices. The use of a dancing body to block light and create shadows tends to facilitate dance improvisation, which can lead a dancer to expand his/her movement vocabulary. The possibilities for the exploration of shadows for lighting designers, dancers, and choreographers are many and become even more varied if a team of artists work in close partnership, sharing and testing ideas across their different roles. The book shows lighting design as a powerful means to create and configure choreography in the generation of original work. It tries to isolate Sombreiro from punctual narratives or storytelling that are also familiar strategies in current dance practices.
