ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores giving and receiving constructive feedback, or critique, as a communication tool that can be useful throughout a collaboration to refine and finalize ideas. For some teams, different communication styles can impact the process of providing feedback. For example, direct communicators may feel more comfortable speaking their minds in a critique, while indirect communicators may wish to avoid possible unnecessary tension or disruption to team harmony. In terms of inter-team dynamics, learning how to critique offers an opportunity to preserve relationships and find the courage to share opinions while boosting individuals’ cognitive flexibility. Working together, teammates can establish indirect and direct methods that are comfortable for all. These critique approaches can be useful as discussion tools for activities your team has already completed. They also pair well with project development and finalization in Chapter 6. We recommend using Mindful Reflection (5.6) individually following earlier team-building activities.
