ABSTRACT

Namibia's voluminous supply of base minerals has been exploited for centuries; in more recent time multinational corporations from the United States have come to dominate this sector of the Namibian economy. US Steel began investing in Namibia in 1969 when it acquired an initial 15% interest in the Africa Triangle Company. Zapata Norness operates in Namibia through Navarro Exploration Company, a wholly owned subsidiary. Namibian diamonds are used for a number of industrial purposes in the US, especially for military and space science applications. American corporate involvement in exploiting Namibia's vast fishery resources has been one of the most neglected areas of study related to the Namibian economy. In addition to the participation of American shipping companies in Namibian trade, US corporations also are actively involved in providing other transportation services to Namibia. Without the services of the American shipping industry, the US commercial interests in Namibia could not have developed to the extent they have.
