ABSTRACT
For more than half a century, local governments have been encouraged to measure their performance.[1] Today, leading professional associations in local government promote the practice.[2,3] But what is performance measurement? What are the principal types or categories of measures? How does performance measurement contribute to local government administration? What distinguishes performance measurement from the related endeavor called benchmarking?
