ABSTRACT
County governments are perhaps the oldest and most familiar units of local government in the United States. Currently, there are 3034 county governments or their equivalentsa in 48 of the 50 states. (Rhode Island and Connecticut abolished county governments in 1842 and 1958, respectively.b) The number, size, and population of counties vary considerably.
