ABSTRACT

A full discussion of the concepts, applications, promises, and realities of court technology and information systems would require, and indeed deserve, an extensive analysis and discussion far beyond the confines of the space possible in the Encyclopedia (for example, see Ref.[1]). Instead, this article will identify court functions that can be enhanced by the application of technology, the types of application software that are available in which to develop these functions, equipment and connectivity options depending upon the size and scope of the functions, and courts, design, implementation and maintenance considerations, and cautions to be exercised. Developing technology and information systems for courts is a highly appropriate activity, because receiving, processing, and disseminating information is the method by which courts achieve their objective.
