ABSTRACT

Inflammation associated with acute pancreatitis may also involve tissues around the pancreas and/or remote organs. Approximately 80% of cases of acute pancreatitis are mild and resolve with simple fluid and electrolyte replacement and analgesia. However, the remaining 20%, representing those with severe acute pancreatitis, are subject to organ failure and/or local complications (e.g. necrosis, pseudocysts, fistulae). Severe disease carries a mortality of 10-20%.
