ABSTRACT

Trauma is the leading cause of death in the first four decades of life. Hypoxia and hypovolaemia are common causes of preventable trauma deaths. The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course teaches a structured approach to the management of trauma. Severely injured patients admitted to an emergency department (ED) will require the immediate attention of the critical care team.
