ABSTRACT
Any doctor may be called upon to examine an individual who has sustained a wound as a result of an accident, an act of self-harm or from an action by a third party. It is essential that the doctor examines all wounds carefully and describes them completely and correctly. The examination and description of wounds can have far-reaching medico-legal implications, which may be civil or criminal and may not become apparent for many months or even years.
