ABSTRACT
The literal translation of the word asphyxia from the Greek means ‘absence of pulse’ and how this word has come to denote the effects of the lack of oxygen is not clear, but the word asphyxia is now commonly used to describe a range of conditions for which the lack of oxygen – whether it is partial (hypoxia) or complete (anoxia) – is considered to be the cause.
