ABSTRACT

Ocular alkali injuries are potentially devastating. Patients may present after accidental injury in their working or domestic environment, or they may have been assaulted.

Problem

Three main problems exist in patients with alkali chemical injuries: (1) the assessment of the primary injury; (2) the initial management of the injury and limitation of limbal stem cell damage; and (3) the management of long-term complications. Evolution of damage continues after the initial insult, and the severity of these injuries should not be underestimated.
