ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the larger context of Nagaland through a theoretically guided overview of major historical influences during the 20th century. Both colonial rule and post-colonial integration into the Indian state brought along deep changes to the previously agrarian Naga tribes. And although the life of contemporary Naga youth is strongly influenced by the international division of labour, the Indian state and global cultural flows, the local historical contexts are the foundations of current cultural and social differentiations among the Nagas. The local history cannot be described simply as “development” but consists of overlapping and contradicting influences and reactions to them. After providing an overview of the Naga village culture, Christianity, the state and politics, the chapter investigates the distinct economic milieus that form the background for economic practices and class inequality in Nagaland.
