ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the statistics of some common civil engineering materials such as aggregates, asphalt, and concrete and different strategies to adopt sustainability while using these materials. More specifically, sustainability is the concept of saving resources for future use without compromising the needs and resources of the present. Sustainability has been a very concerning topic because of the continued growth of the population, increased use of natural resources affecting the environment, social impacts, and economic considerations. Manufacturing of crushed stone requires several steps, such as drilling, blasting, crushing, transportation, and so on. About 42% of the aggregates consumed by weight in the United States have been processed through crushing. Asphalt material is typically produced by removing the lighter hydrocarbon molecules through a combination of vacuum and heat, or by mixing with a solvent, such as propane.
