ABSTRACT

The Columns help teachers understand each child’s progress toward mastery. For kindergarten, there are five columns. Students that fall into Column 1 have a strong grasp on phonological awareness along with letter/sound correspondence. Students in Column 2 need more practice with letter naming. These students are falling below the 40th percentile on the universal screener. Column 3 identifies students who need additional practice with letter sounds. These children do not yet have letter sounds mastered, and are falling below the 40th percentile on the universal screener for letter sounds. Column 4 is for students who need additional work in phonological awareness. The Heggerty curriculum for kindergarten is a great Tier 1 resource for daily work in the area of phonological awareness, and for kids falling in this Column. Column 5 is for students who need additional practice with high frequency words. These children need to work on saying them, and most likely, spelling them.
