ABSTRACT

Science notebooks provide a safe space for such practice, especially if students know that the writing is not directly graded. Notebooks provide an opportunity to write frequently, to go through the process of picking what to write, how to write it, and to experience the painstaking work of moving from thought to words, and from words to sentences. For the use of notebooks to record notes on readings, lectures, and videos, the process is pretty much self-explanatory and the examples a bit mundane. It often requires five or six entries for students to relax and start to see the value of their science notebooks. Students need to be able to see their personal growth, which cannot happen unless there are multiple entries.
