ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an integrative treatment approach that combines neuromodulation techniques with medical remedies and psychological support. Established as the Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Functional Rehabilitation Pain Program some 20 years ago, the program has sufficient history to facilitate appraisal of long-term outcomes. Primary services include medical management, neurofeedback, psychotherapy, physical therapy, and ILF Neurofeedback including Alpha-Theta training. The burden of chronic pain on daily life, consequences of inadequately treating pain, prescription drug abuse, and key findings are briefly reviewed. Neurofeedback contributes to recovery via two primary modalities: first, through infra-low frequency training it provides a pathway for recovery from acquired neural dysregulation. Alpha-Theta training is introduced for the resolution of psychological traumas, and to help eliminate learned fears and adverse behaviors. Follow-up assessments demonstrate the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary program. Overall, patients experience reduced pain, improved coping strategies, positive stress management, and increased endurance and stamina. This chapter will provide illustrative case reports.
