ABSTRACT

Significant advances in neuromodulation for psychological and psychiatric disorders over the past few decades have resulted in mitigation of suffering and improved quality of life for previously hopeless conditions. This chapter discusses and documents how integrating neurofeedback combined with either psychotherapy, medication, or both has changed the landscape of how to best treat people in need. Extensive research studies show the effectiveness of using psychotropic medications combined with neuromodulation techniques to help individuals who suffer from mood disorders, PTSD, anxiety, and addictions. The potential to solve these problems without the use of medications makes it an attractive option for exploration for clinicians. From 3 years of integrating neurofeedback into psychiatric practice at the Mind & Body Treatment Institute, the author chose two illustrative case studies. The topics of the case studies are Postpartum Bipolar Disorder and Severe Generalized Anxiety Disorder with Alcohol Dependence. For each case study, an overview of the presentation is followed by the treatment protocol and a discussion of the theory behind the choice of protocol, as well as of the results. The two cases focus on opportunities to expand the conversation for clinicians to integrate novel, evidence-based interventions to best care for their patients and client needs.
