ABSTRACT

The assessment project also included a research design to measure the effects of involving employees in productivity improvement opportunity identification and action planning. In 1980, the hospital system recognized the need to address productivity and initiated a productivity improvement effort. A Productivity Steering Committee was established representing ten departments: radiology, administration, information systems, occupational therapy, social services, accounting, records management, nursing, and personnel. The hospital system initiated the step with a 2-day workshop for members of the Productivity Steering Committee and has continued and maintained the activity via management/supervisory training and new employee orientation. In the feedback phase the “findings” were presented to the department productivity assessment task force. A key concern or measure of productivity improvement for organizations is of an economic nature. The top three areas of organization and leadership, communications, and reward and recognition were selected and employee groups developed action plans which specified planning steps to be taken to achieve the productivity improvement.
