ABSTRACT

If someone asked you to tell the story of your life, and you agreed, how would you tell that story? Obviously, you can’t tell everything, or even remember everything. Instead what you will probably do is tell events that seem important to explaining who you are today. So it is that stories are told in nearly all groups and societies recounting in narrative form facts and persons important to knowing who they are, and how to live in that society now. These stories are often called myths, not myth in the negative sense of stories that are not true, but in the positive sense of being stories that, true or not, relate cultural values. We will consider cosmogonic myths, that is, stories of the origin of the world, and hero myths, stories that show us how to get back in right relationship with God or the gods.
