ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the widespread benefits when athletes experience a caring and task-involving climate in sport. These benefits are not only related to their sport experience but also to their life beyond sport. Within the sport context, athletes, who perceive a caring and task-involving climate, try harder, strategize during practices, have more fun, note greater commitment, report cooperating with others, and, have better relationships with their teammates and coaches. However, when athletes perceive a caring and task-involving climate they can also experience benefits that influence their life-to-life skill development (e.g., develop life skills like initiative, empathy for others, teamwork, and engaging in caring and prosocial behaviors) and health (e.g., report more happiness and hope and less depression and sadness and experience less stress).
