ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to present a framework for sustainable engineering, which builds on concepts and principles. The overarching goal is to generate a balanced solution to any engineering problem. A unique vocabulary is emerging to describe concepts related to sustainable engineering. Engineers understand the concept of physical principles such as conservation of mass, energy, or momentum. They provide the ideas, rules, or concepts to keep in mind when solving an engineering problem. Design and engineering increase the extent and influence of the technical cycle through the creation of products, infrastructures, processes, and services. The Engineering Projects box is linked to Individuals box, meaning that technical progress is incurred by and benefits individuals in the social sphere. The framework positions engineering activities relative to other efforts to achieve a sustainable development and guide Life Cycle Engineering practitioners toward creating engineering solutions that are sustainable in absolute terms.
