ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the aspects of operations that are most vital to executing the strategic vision and plans of the enterprise. If the enterprise seeks a wedge into a new business area, recruiting an internationally recognized expert puts the organization “on the map.” However, the hiring manger should recognize that this person will need immediate staff to support his/her efforts. With respect to increasing the applicant’s interest in the position—a crucial ingredient in recruitment—interviewers should determine the candidate’s expectations of the challenges and opportunities presented by the position and the organization as a whole. The management of salaries for scientists and engineers seems to be an arcane topic in most research organizations and not much better understood by most managers than by the employees. Recognizing the obvious flaws of the raise management model, many organizations move to a modified raise management model tied to overlapping salary bands.
