ABSTRACT

Indian cinema has popularised virtuous anger as a political emotion attached to leadership and citizenship in South India. This chapter shows how cinematic virtuous anger functioned as a factor of mobilisation during the elections of 2009 and 2014 in Andhra Pradesh. It focuses on the political campaigns of two famous actors, Chiranjeevi and his brother Pawan Kalyan, both of whom were lifted from the silver screen onto the platform of electoral politics. It then identifies both the potential and difficulties of mobilising fans as voters.
