ABSTRACT

Collecting data for forensic linguistic research is inevitably vexed. Sources such as court or police interview transcripts are often unreliable as primary sources for linguistic research and original recordings are notoriously inaccessible to most researchers. This chapter sets out some practical tools and methods for collecting data that are suitable for a range of research projects, including school and undergraduate projects as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research. Several suggestions are also made for classroom activities in order to extend the benefits of analysing language in a legal context to schools and general undergraduate linguistics coursework degrees.
