ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the wind loads on some structures, and appendages attached to buildings, are discussed. The chapter also discusses wind loading of free-standing roofs or canopies, including tensioned fabric roofs, solar panels attached to the roofs of buildings, as well as other appendages attached to buildings such as canopies, awnings, balconies and scaffolding. The chapter further discusses some approaches, including other sources of shape coefficients and force coefficients, for such structures, including offshore platforms. For both types, roofs on enclosed buildings and in the form of free-standing roofs, or canopies were discussed. The special problems of wind effects on compliant offshore structures are discussed in a number of specialist publications. Various other specialist sources for design loads have been cited in the Chapter, such as publications by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Engineering Sciences Data Unit, Structural Engineers Association of California, and the Scaffolding and Construction Equipment Association of Japan.
