ABSTRACT

The Intruder must have made its first modest appearance when ape-like ancestors earned the name of Homo. The essence of the Intruder was a heightening of awareness—a movement away from instinctive fixation and towards mental freedom. As man grew through the long period of proto-civilization and afterwards of civilization, the awareness anthropologists have called the Intruder expressed itself in divination and prophecy and inspired testimony. Increasing awareness is in reality the fundamental principle which lies behind the growth of intellect. In plants, every imaginable device is used to make the degree of awareness that there is effective in reaching its various goals. At a low level of awareness, the mind is almost completely under the sway of instinct, which causes it to accept everything as obvious in a hypnotic manner. That intellectual advance arises from enhanced awareness, and the attainment of partial freedom from the grip of instinct, can be illustrated by an example.
