ABSTRACT

Most of the psychotherapeutic models that are used to treat NSSI approach it as a symptom of BPD. Thus, they do not have NSSI as their primary or only target but focus on other symptoms of BPD as well. This chapter offers an outline of time-limited therapeutic interventions that can be used as add-on treatments for patients with NSSI: Problem Solving Therapy (PST), Manual-Assisted Cognitive Therapy (MACT), Emotion Regulation Group Therapy (ERGT), family therapy and physical exercise as interventions for NSSI. In recent years, mobile phone apps have emerged as a new mode of treatment for NSSI. Examples include CalmHarm, BlueIce and Therapeutic Evaluative Conditioning (TEC), which have proved helpful in reducing NSSI. Finally, the chapter outlines the core element of psychotherapy for NSSI based on the clinical guidelines that have been developed in different countries, including UK, Australia, Germany and Sweden.
