ABSTRACT

The chapter opens with a review of Nock & Prinstein’s Four-Function Model from 2004, which describes the basic functions NSSI can serve for the an individual engaging in NSSI. The model can be used in developing individual treatment plans for NSSI based on the assumption that the patient is using self-injury for want of a better set of skills. Understanding the function NSSI serves for the person in a given situation provides a good basis for helping the person develop more effective skills that are not self-destructive. Next, it reviews studies of the multiple functions NSSI can serve for the individual and, finally, a model for perpetuating NSSI
