ABSTRACT

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in producing bio-based polymer and novel process technologies in food packaging that could decline fossil fuel material dependency. Bionanocomposites open a new window for the use of novel, high-performance, and green nanocomposites materials, which is making them substitute commercial nonbiodegradable petroleum-based plastic packaging material in the food industry. In this chapter, several applications of biopolymer nanomaterials in food packaging will be reviewed, including biopolymer sources, bioactive nanocomposite, nanocomposite as high barrier, and biosensor nanocomposite. Also, the safety of using these materials in food packaging and methods of assessment to determine their functional properties are discussed.
