ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an encouraging domain of societal, technical, and economic importance. The IoT is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings, and other objects—embedded with software, electronic devices, sensors, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and share information or data. Its applications range from smart connected homes to wearables to healthcare. The IoT is now becoming an important part of our lives. Adoption of IoT technology in various domains, such as industries, transportation systems, logistics, energy, and well-being, improves these domains' current operational efficiency and interactions with people. Building an IoT real-time-based application involves the proper selection of a combination of sensors, networks, and communication modules, supported with the concepts of image processing, cloud computing, and so on. This chapter highlights some of the widely used applications where IoT plays an important role. Broad components of IoT and its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. Many new applications will evolve, as new devices, sensors, and chips are developed.
