Preparing to Develop a Lean-Thinking Workforce
A company’s Human Resources department can play the role of change agent. It can change the way that the workforce views lean manufacturing and how employees operate in a lean manufacturing system.
The Human Resources department (HRD) at Rudrey, now with a specific mission (see Chapter 1), had to develop a strategy. They approached this by determining the following criteria, covered in more depth throughout the rest of this chapter:
• Who needs to be trained: With different classifications of employees, you must first determine who needs the training. Supervisors? Line associates? Maintenance staff? With limited resources, most HR departments cannot train everyone at the same time and must prioritize.
