ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on structural issues such as short sentences, stylistic practices associated with identifying people and attributing quotes, and conceptual approaches such as writing with objectivity. All public relations writing should strive for simplicity of style, but news writing especially cries out for this quality. Public relations writers often find themselves writing about people in their relationship to organizations. Public relations writers often wish to present information and opinions that come from someone they wish to present as a news source. Conventional news writing style has a few guidelines on how to use speech tags for quotes within the format of a news release. In news writing, readers should know they are obtaining facts, not the opinion, speculation, beliefs, rants or editorial comments of the writer. As a public relations writer preparing news copy, students will need to observe this practice by writing objectively.
