ABSTRACT

A sketch of the questions dealt with in monetary economics is followed by a delineation of a hierarchy of libraries for the optimal use of library resources for research in the subfield. This chapter deals with economic subfields have been asked to speculate on the optimal role for different types of libraries with respect to materials related to those subfields. It discusses the organization of libraries. Monetary economics generally covers developments in monetary theory dealing with the influence of the quantity of money on the economy and in the conduct of monetary policy-including the goals and instruments of policymakers, institutional arrangements employed in monetary decisions, as well as the effectiveness of policy. With the cost of books and periodical subscriptions skyrocketing, local self-sufficiency in providing library materials is no longer likely as a realistic option. Indiscriminate duplication of titles will give way to shared responsibility for collecting the materials for research in monetary economics.
