ABSTRACT

The State University of New York is a multicampus university which, in response to the fiscal and operational problems which are facing higher education, is developing a library network. This chapter focuses on the work which has been done or is proposed, to transform the libraries of the State University of New York into a library network. It describes the University, the environment in which it is operating, and the problems which its libraries face. The chapter discusses the problems of developing and implementing a general framework for library network development in which specific disciplinary problems are recognized but are handled within a total system of service. There is a total lack of adequate library management formulae, whether for collection size, personnel performance, and even space allocation, although excellent work has been done on the last topic. One valuable and increasingly viable option is the possibility of transmission of pages of text by cable TV or telefacsimile from store to library.
