ABSTRACT

The coup was prepared by the land forces, whose commander-in-chief was General Juan Velasco Alvarado. In the north, the deposits at La Brea and Parinas were exploited by the International Petroleum Company (IPC), an affiliate of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. In exchange, the IPC obtained the right to refine the crude oil from these deposits and to distribute the refined product in the installations constructed by IPC and the Empresa Petrolera Fiscalc. The military regime is undeniably dictatorial, since it does not owe its existence to elections and has not established any system of consulting the citizenry about its decisions. The American People's Revolutionary Alliance and the other parties condemned the coup. There was an abortive attempt at a general strike. The parliaments of various Latin American countries condemned the seizure of power by the Peruvian military. Peru, like all Latin American countries, for years has had a university crisis.
