ABSTRACT

Using the Self-Help Statistics for 1977, it is possible to correlate measures of "peoples' contribution" in each district with comparative levels of wealth within the districts, as indicated by the Statistical Abstract for 1976. Within the provinces, there is considerable variation in self-help activity according to district. As the election drew closer, all communities were able to turn the rivalry to some advantage, but not without earlier cost to morale and to self-help projects. Nthawa and Kisiara are the only two locations which show a clear and steady increase in contributions to self-help projects, the former slowly and the latter sharply. Weithaga has had a large number of projects, and its residents have been called upon to support a variety of Harambee activities both within and without the location, projects such as the Murang'a College of Technology or the Kahuti water supply.
